Session Takeaways - Sui Basecamp Dubai 2025

Christian Thompson, Managing Director at Sui Foundation – Sui doubles down on developer tooling for real-world scalability
In his welcome keynote, Christian Thompson set the tone for Sui Basecamp 2025 with a global message: this event is for builders. With over 2,000 attendees from 90 countries, the Sui ecosystem is scaling intentionally, not just technologically—but socially. Tools like Walrus (decentralized storage), DeepBook (on-chain liquidity layer), and SEAL (decentralized secrets manager) are designed for scale across gaming, media, and AI.

  • “We’re just getting started. Internally we say we’re 1% done.”
  • Walrus enables fast, decentralized file storage—already in use for AI/gaming
  • SEAL will embed private, encrypted data access into the Sui protocol layer
  • Over half of Basecamp attendees are already building on Sui

Adeniyi Abiodun, Sui Foundation – “We’re not just building a blockchain. We’re rebuilding the internet.”

At Sui Basecamp 2025, Adeniyi Abiodun presented a comprehensive update on Sui’s attempt to decentralize the full technology stack. Rather than focusing on single features, the talk outlined a systemic approach to infrastructure—from fast consensus to secrets management, decentralized storage, and programmable Bitcoin layers. The underlying idea: centralization isn’t just inefficient—it’s expensive and insecure.

Sui’s engineering timeline reflects that belief, delivering protocol upgrades aimed at performance, developer velocity, and operational safety at scale.

  • Sui now supports $1.7B+ in TVL, with 1.4M+ active wallets and 6B+ in trading volume via DeepBook
  • Core infra releases: Walrus (decentralized storage), SEAL (on-chain secrets), DeepBook, ZKLogin, and SuiNS upgrades
  • Institutional partners include Grayscale, Franklin Templeton, and VanEck, building products directly on-chain
  • New primitives like MistyCity v2, Remora, and Nautilus target validator throughput, MEV protection, and off-chain compute verification

George Danezis, Mysten Labs – “Storage is not a side feature. It’s infrastructure.”

George Danezis presented the technical foundation of Walrus, a decentralized storage protocol built natively on Sui and now live on mainnet. His message: decentralized applications aren’t truly decentralized if their assets—frontends, media, contracts—still live on Web2 infrastructure. Walrus changes that. By combining erasure coding, Sui-native smart contract control, and tight integration with Sui’s Move programming environment, Walrus offers both scalable storage and programmable data lifecycle management.

The stack also expands with SEAL (confidential file access with on-chain policy control) and Nautilus (verified off-chain compute via trusted environments). Together, they form a decentralized data assurance layer—aimed at integrity, privacy, and persistence.

  • Walrus has already stored 440+ TB of data and seen 500M+ WAL used for staking and operations
  • Storage durability via erasure-coded distribution with 5x overhead and ⅔ node fault tolerance
  • SEAL: on-chain access policies for encrypted content; integrates with Sui smart contracts
  • Nautilus: verified TEE compute output usable in Sui contracts, opening doors to secure AI, oracles, and privacy-first transaction logic

OMER SADIKA, IKA – FOUNDER. Decentralize the Whole Stack
🔗 Watch the full session in this video
Omer Sadika, a cybersecurity veteran, introduced IKA’s “zero-trust” approach to blockchain interoperability. Unlike most bridge-based or wrapped-token solutions, IKA ensures users retain full asset control through a new cryptographic method: 2PC-MPC. This allows decentralized signing across hundreds of validators without requiring users to give up custody. At the heart of this system is the D-Wallet—a transferable, programmable wallet that maps to native accounts across Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and more. Developers can now coordinate actions on multiple chains using smart contracts deployed on Sui.

  • IKA introduces 2PC-MPC: combining user-side control with validator-level MPC consensus
  • D-Wallets enable programmable control of native assets on Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, etc.
  • All logic and coordination flows through Sui, which acts as the interoperability layer
  • Programmable accounts are now transferable across chains—no bridges, no wrappers

COSMO JIANG, PANTERA CAPITAL – PORTFOLIO MANAGER. Crypto Investing in an Uncertain World
🔗 Watch the full session in this video
Cosmo Jiang broke down Pantera’s macro view of crypto investing in a volatile and uncertain market environment. From tariff shocks to historic fear sentiment indicators, Cosmo framed the downturn as a setup for long-term recovery. He walked through the alignment of global liquidity expansion with Bitcoin’s performance, the real revenues generated by decentralized apps and physical infrastructure networks (DePIN), and how stablecoins are solving real-world treasury problems. The session closed with a thesis: crypto is entering its “escape velocity” moment.

  • Market pullbacks mirror past cycles, historically followed by rebounds
  • Bitcoin benefits directly from global liquidity growth and macro instability
  • DePIN protocols are generating 9-figure revenues from Fortune 500 and government clients
  • Stablecoins are being used by companies like SpaceX for global treasury ops

ALEX SVANEVIK, NANSEN – CEO. Why Web3 Will Win
🔗 Watch the full session in this video
Alex Svanevik, CEO of Nansen, shared his evolving view of the multi-chain landscape—having moved from Ethereum maximalism to recognizing Sui and others as rising leaders. He argued that the next frontier in blockchain adoption lies in bridging institutional and retail interest: from meme coins to tokenized treasuries, and soon, tokenized equities. Nansen now secures over $1B in staked assets and operates validators on 30 chains. Svanevik called for a financial future built on ownership, transparency, and inclusive infrastructure.

  • Nansen now stakes $135M in Sui and runs validators across 30 chains
  • Ethereum no longer leads in on-chain metrics like revenue or active users
  • Tokenized treasuries exceed $6B—but are held by fewer than 1,200 addresses
  • Meme coins see far broader retail participation: Shiba Inu has 1.2M holders
  • Tokenized equity may become the product that unites institutional and retail appetite
